Great anticipation here for the release tomorrow of Phlegm's new prints, Documenting Everything. We are hoping to see a few brought in for framing, so we've worked out a good price for a great design for the piece - see details below. We saw a fair few of the Civilisation prints a year or so ago, which were framed with great results.
The print is due to be released tomorrow at 10.30 am on phlegm's blogpost, in an edition of 100 - you can see details: click here...
Discounted frame offer:
The style of this 50x37 cm print on 280gsm ivory Fabriano paper really lends itself to one of our float frames which highlight the torn and deckled edges. Hand finished deep rebate ashwood, with black polish and 19mm white inserts, with the print float-mounted with acid-free hinge tapes onto 5mm conservation foamboard. Here's an example of a similar frame we made for a Paul Klee print...
£12.50 OFF framing:
For the early birds bringing in one of Phlegm's new prints to frame in the style we have suggested there will be a discounted price of £80.00: order by 15th April and receive £12.50 off the normal price of £92.50.
Of course, we'd also be happy to show other framing styles for the piece.
For example, framed in M1 flat grainy black 40mm(w)x15mm(d), with acid free window mount and backer (70mm border), the price will be £48.50 and for a polished matt black finish (same profile size) the price will be £58.50.
Each year we host a series of short shows in the spring (spring? did someone say spring?) featuring the work of students at Sheffield Hallam University Art School, from the 2nd year Fine Art, Creative Arts Practice, and Graphics courses. This has grown and we now often see exhibitors from previous years return to do 2nd or even 3rd shows, and also from other Art Schools. Today, a group from Leeds Metropolitan University and Sheffield College are setting up for their event "Something Sheffield".
Exhibtions this March have come in the form of...
'Mark, Make, Print' by Joshua Kent
'At Odds' a group show by a number of Creative Art Practice students from Sheffield Hallam Univercity.
'Just Because' a colaboration of graphic and print based work by Sheffield Hallam students.
'Something Sheffield' by a group of students from Leeds and Sheffield, who are hosting their live art and music events. CLICK HERE...

The Number Cut Outs is a group of eight prints from 2 designs which are inspired by a series of 1968 screen prints by the Yorkshire painter John Langton which we acquired to sell in 2005.
John Langton is better known for his atmospheric treatments of light in landscape and gardens, but at the time he was keen to experiment with the then new art of screen printing, and did a series of hard edge abstract compositions using numbers and shapes. To me they had an exciting retro look and a 60s art school feel - I remember watching a student intern teaching assistant doing similar screen prints at my school at about that time.
John Langton told me that he had been influenced by the blocky shapes in Matisse's cut-outs, and I used the appealing misregistration and blockiness of the work as the basis for a series of prints which were printed digitally for a commission for the City Learning Centre at Newfield School, in which elements of the vector artwork were deliberately misaligned to create a built up feel with small gaps between the areas of colour.
Studio work on this stage of the project was by Ben McErlain in the Archipelago studio at the time. There were eight pieces and at last, working with another Ben (McLaughlin) and Josh Bedford I have produced the first two of these as screen prints, with one area of translucent colour overprinted on to base colour areas to generate extra colour blocks. In the two pieces carried out to date, there are four colourways so far, each of which is in a signed limited edition of 10.

Kenneth Steel (RBA, SGA 1906-1970) - 3 Electricity Substation, Moore St, Sheffield - 3 Charcoal Pencil on Daler Watercolour board, c. 1964
This drawing was not produced by the architect, but is believed to have been commissioned from the artist by the CEGB and taken from plans before construction, probably for a prospectus or company report. The view is of the rear of the building from Hanover Way looking southeast; the roundabout at the junction of Ecclesall Road would be to the right of this picture.
The existence of this drawing is one of pure chance - it was found and rescued from rubbish destined for the skip during the demolition of a factory on Penistone Road about 11 years ago.
Kenneth Steel (RBA, SGA 1906-1970) Painter in watercolour, engraver & lithographer of landscapes & street scenes; poster designer. Born Sheffield 9/7/1906, son of G.T.Steel, an artist and silver engraver. Studied at Sheffield College of Art under Anthony Betts. Represented in several public collections. Achieved a prolific output of artwork for the railways. Based in Crookes, Sheffield for years. Produced posters for LNER & BR. Well-known to the travelling public as the artist of panoramic scenes that were shown framed beneath the luggage rack in the compartments on railway carriages.
This piece is shown here by kind permission of Mr Malcolm Camp.
